Ah November! The great countdown to Christmas; the anticipation of family gatherings, with a delicious first chapter at Thanksgiving. New Year resolutions approaching, but first, turkey with all the trimmings, including second servings of both the bird and desserts, without shame or guilt… maybe. Oddly enough, turkey is not featured among this month’s National Food Holidays, which begins with National Bison Day on November 1st. Can you imagine if we served bison for Thanksgiving? Totally different story.
November 1st is also World Vegan Day, and that is a fine prelude to the things to come. But if you’d rather jump right into the sweetness of things, you’ll be glad to know that November is National Raisin Bread Month. Cinnamon Raisin French Toast is a favorite, even among people who despise raisins. And we cannot pass on this occasion to remind you of a certain 158 Main classic: our Grilled Cinnamon Raisin Bread topped with maple ganache. You’ll find this on the Breakfast Menu and the Brunch Menu too.
Other noteworthy Food Holidays this month include National Nachos Day on November 6, followed by “Cook Something Bold & Pungent Day” on the 9th. We’ll leave that one up to your creative imagination. National Pizza with Everything Day is on the 12th, and it is no doubt better suited to family consensus.
National Homemade Bread Day is on the 17th, which is a Sunday and Brunch Day for us, and a good opportunity to think about the many fresh loaves you could give away this holiday season. They make a tasteful thank you gift and host/hostess gift.
On the 21st, you could celebrate National Gingerbread Day. It is not necessary to build an elaborate gingerbread house, though this is a worthwhile project if there are children at home. Gingerbread cookies with milk and a good book are among the sweetest things in life. November 24th is National Sardines Day, which seems out of place this time of year, though a great source of omega oils to keep your mind sharp and body warm as winter eases its way into Vermont.
We come full circle with National French Toast Day on the same day as Thanksgiving. How sweet is that?! Here, then, is all of November, one Food Holiday at a time. Bon appétit!
