November Food Fest

When November rolls around, most people start dreaming of traditional Holiday meals with all the trimmings. Even single folks living alone make it a point to savor the Holiday fare, single-portion style, throughout the month and well beyond Christmas.

Summer is for Barbecues and picnics; November is about so much more than Turkey, and this time of year is about gatherings and a festive spirit. Wouldn’t it be fun to partake of every daily food holiday throughout the month? Of course, you might have to take a few days off here and there for meal planning. Wonder how that would work for an excuse for a personal day! “Hmm, boss! Next Thursday is National Cranberry Relish Day. Could I have Wednesday and Thursday off? I’ll need one day to make it.”

Oh, here’s an idea: Get your colleagues involved. Make teams. Every member picks a food from the daily National Food Holidays to bring in for sharing on the appointed day. If the food in question is too complex or exotic, a “variation on the theme” could be allowed. If there are ten of you on your team, then everyone gets three turns.

Food is a topic that is so rich in memories and sensations. It speaks to everyone, deeply, and it helps us connect with others. You know what we mean. We’ve all had the experience of needing to broach a difficult topic with someone and realizing that it is so much easier over a good meal. It’s not even about who’s paying; it’s about the sharing of the meal. It’s that powerful.

Here’s a list of November’s daily Food Celebrations to feed your curiosity and imagination and to inspire your gatherings, your table and sharing, and perhaps even to help you break the ice and discover new friends. Oddly enough, National Turkey Day (AKA Turkey Lovers Day) is observed on the third Sunday in June. But back to November for now, and may we highlight a few favorites? World Sandwich Day (Nov 3), Nachos Day (Nov 6), Pizza with Everything Day (Nov 12), and National French Toast Day (Nov 28). Here’s the entire month, one bite at a time.
