June Food Fest

national food holidays for june

Which one makes your mouth water most? National Steakhouse Month, National Seafood Month or National Turkey Lover’s Month? Oh, and if you’re not into meat and seafood, June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month too. A perfect lineup for al fresco dining, don’t you think?

On the other hand, a few of this month’s food celebrations seem a bit out of place. Take National Strawberry Shortcake Day, on June 14, for example. We would move this one to July 4th, along with National Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie Day, on June 9. Although, as far as capturing the spirit of a good, down-to-earth summer day goes, those two sweet dish highlights actually do embody the return to the carefree, leisurely living we so appreciate in early June.

Strawberry Rhubarb pie alone evokes comforting memories, along with a few kitchen-side debates regarding crust preferences. There are those who insist that a traditional strawberry-rhubarb pie requires a classic lattice crust. Perhaps this is meant to be reminiscent of garden harbors and outdoor dining. Others yet prefer the free spirit of the open-crust pie, showing off the sweet fruits of the land and holding nothing back. Bees and other flying critters would tend to agree.

June begins at the breakfast or brunch table with National Egg Day on the 3rd, followed by National Cheese Day on the 4th. Mozzarella, Cheddar and Brie are America’s favorite cheeses. Who loves cheese as much as we do? Mice, of course. Only thing is, they really don’t. In tests, mice offered a choice of grains or sweets and cheese will devour the first two before touching the latter. Of course, we have a theory about that: They are saving the best for last!

Another day to notice this month is June 13, Kitchen Klutzes of America Day. As in, the number one never-spoken-openly-but-often-observed reason for dining out? Survey says?!
