What makes breakfast so different from other meals? We come together for breakfast. That is, we gather ourselves. If sleeping rests the mind and body, then breakfast is our grounding moment. We are not ready to face the day when we step over the threshold of the job site or classroom; we are ready to face the day in that instant when we can pause and allow a picture of “what is” to form in the mind’s eye. This can be done without food, of course, but the act of sitting for the first meal of the day adds an important dimension. It is like approaching the hearth and preparing to light the fire. This is never done without a sense of reverence. Lunch replenishes and dinner is recompense, but breakfast is a fire in the hearth at the beginning of a cold day.
