CHAPTER 7

Playing For Pizza – by John Grisham

Pizza and football. By far a perfect pair, but in this case in an unlikely place. We are so delighted to have stumbled upon this uncommon read by acclaimed author John Grisham, who admits his own surprise at stumbling upon football, that is, real American football, while visiting Bologna, Italy, to research a previous novel.

While there, Grisham met a 10-year veteran football player, met the team and their coach, an American from Illinois. The story unfolded naturally. Not only does it give a new, yet at the same time familiar spin to our favorite sport, but it also offers a heartfelt account of Italian dining and wine.

Publishers Weekly says of this intriguing Grisham piece that it is a, “charming tale of touchdowns and tortellini.” If you surmise by these few words the presence of an underlying love story, you are correct. Italian food, football and love; a perfect triangle.

A Slice of Murder, by Chris Cavender (AKA Tim Myers)

“Pizza lovers will relish the pseudonymous Cavender’s delightful first in a new cozy series, which introduces Eleanor Swift, owner of A Slice of Life, a pizzeria in Timber Ridge, N.C. When late one winter night Eleanor delivers a pizza… she finds her customer, Richard Olsen, lying dead on the floor.” The chief of police believes she is guilty. The plot unfolds like carefully stretched pizza dough as new characters are introduced who improvise themselves investigator for the moment, to help Eleanor prove her innocence.

While there are no pizza recipes included, as suggests a reader and reviewer, this food inspired novel is said to be a good cozy read with a fast paced storyline that makes a few possible flaws (it’s a matter of perspective) irrelevant. In a few words, it is a delicious read and the other titles in the series are just as delightful. Proof that you can’t go wrong with pizza.

Happy Reading!
