A place to sit. A round table for friends. A square table for business. But add a meal to a square table and suddenly it creates a circle. Food is like a fire, a place to gather and warm up to our humanity. Even food eaten alone somehow connects us to something greater than ourselves. There is solitude in a meal eaten alone, but not quite loneliness, as if the act of eating restored the certainty of our place in a shared story. Every time we pull up a chair to a table, we in fact reclaim our place in the world. We sit at breakfast to begin the day, at lunch when we pause in the midst of activities, chores and hard work, and at dinner at the end of the day, when all is said and done. And when all is said and done, we continue telling our story, sharing fears, hopes, dreams, surrounded by others, united by colors, aromas and textures that spice up life for a moment.
