What happens to daily food holidays on a month that fluctuates between 28 and 29 days? Since there’s no room for the 29th this year, Surf & Turf is left out. But we do get a consolation prize. February 28 is National Chocolate Soufflé Day. This raises another important question: shouldn’t we celebrate such a regal chocolate dessert on the 14th, when Valentines dine staring into each other’s eyes?
Rest assured, February 14th is appropriately honored. It is National Cream-Filled Chocolates Day. February is especially sweet, with no less than 16 dessert celebrations, deliciously balanced with a few choice Italian delicacies, including Pizza on February 9th. It is preceded by Fettuccine Alfredo on the 7th and followed by National Tortellini Day on the 13th. Incidentally, February 13th is National Italian Food Day. If Italy is the land of romance, then this celebration is perfectly timed.
One February food highlight stands out: Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day. Why not just “Dog Biscuit Day?” Ah, wait! Because a dog truly appreciates simple pleasures with all his or her heart, with no distraction whatsoever from an incessant internal dialogue or a hand-held device. Hmm… a noteworthy lesson to us humans perhaps.
Here is a list of Food Celebrations for this month. It may inspire your dinner menu, provide ideas for those times you are able to enjoy an evening with friends or cause you to dream of exotic destinations. That right there is a whole other take on vacation planning. Research a food. See where it leads you.
Also consider the learning opportunities for children. This list alone raises several intriguing questions about food and food culture. Who invented Nutella? How is the cream put in cream-filled chocolates? Why is it called Indian Pudding? What is the origin of Clam Chowder?
