It does not matter if we are rich or poor. It does not matter if we have received high education or barely completed high school. It does not matter if we are a shaper of history or content to live a simple, even unremarkable life. It does not matter if we have a strong voice or prefer silence. It does not matter if we share the table with many or with our own thoughts. In that instant when food is placed before us, we are granted a reward for all the thought and energy put in facing and surviving another night, another morning, another afternoon, another challenge, another day in this simple, yet complex thing we call living. It does not matter if the food before us is a hearty soup, or salad, or something utterly restricted from our new year’s diet plan. In that instant when the food arrives and the sight of it drains all concerns from the mind, we are biting into life and that is all that matters. We make rules for ourselves to eat lean, avoid salt, avoid fat. Would we make rules to bite into less than all of life?
