This is our second suggestion in a series of easy-to-make bouchées or appetizers for the summer. Our starting point is bread. Our Bread Serving Suggestions segment says of Cinnamon Raisin that it is “simply out of this world for French Toast.” And wait till you taste these succulent bites!
Ingredients (for 4 bites):
2 slices Cinnamon Raisin bread
1/2 apple of choice, thinly sliced (or Granny Smith for a sweet/tart effect)
Strong Cheddar, shredded – as much as you would use in 1 sandwich
Small dish of honey, for dipping
Preparation:
This treat’s flavor comes from a contrast in tastes and textures. Place 1 of the bread slices on a cookie sheet. Add a thin layer of Cheddar. Add apple slices. Top with remaining cheese. Place under broiler, briefly, to allow cheese to melt. Immediately cover with remaining slice of bread. Cut into 6 fingers. Serve on a plate, fanned around the honey dip. Enjoy.
Variation: Add finely chopped nuts to the honey for texture or dip in fruit preserve of choice.
Another variation: Cut in smaller bites. Top with sliced strawberry. Secure with cocktail toothpicks and serve as an appetizer.
